Definition

In one sentence about Deposit Hold

A deposit hold is a temporary delay between a deposit being credited to an account and some or all of those funds becoming available to withdraw or spend.

01

Why Deposit Holds Exist

A deposited check can be returned unpaid after the receiving institution has credited it. Funds-availability rules balance customer access with that collection risk. A hold does not necessarily mean the deposit has failed.

02

What Changes the Release Date

Deposit type, deposit method, bank cutoff time, business days, account age, deposit size, repeated overdrafts, redeposited checks, collectibility concerns, and emergencies can affect timing. The hold notice should state why an exception applies and when funds are scheduled to become available.

03

Business Days, Banking Days, and Cutoffs

A deposit made after the posted cutoff or when an office is not open for substantially all banking functions can be treated as received on a later banking day. Branch, ATM, and mobile channels can use different receipt rules.

04

What to Check on the Hold Notice

Save the deposit receipt and notice. Verify the accepted deposit date, total amount, amount available sooner, delayed amount, reason for the delay, and calendar date the remaining funds are scheduled to become available.

In short

Use the exact release date in the hold notice and count business days from the bank's accepted deposit date, not only from the time you initiated the deposit.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does a deposit showing in my account mean I can spend it?

Not always. A deposit can appear in account activity while part of it remains unavailable. Check the available balance and any hold notice before scheduling payments against the deposit.

Does mobile deposit count as received immediately?

Not necessarily. The mobile-deposit agreement and cutoff determine when the institution treats an item as received. Save the confirmation and review its stated availability date.

Does availability guarantee that a check is valid?

No. A check can later be returned unpaid even after funds become available. Availability timing is not a guarantee of final payment or authenticity.
